The open-air Museum of the Great War on Piccolo Lagazuoi covers a wide area of Mount Lagazuoi, at heights ranging from 2100m and 2800m.

A number of footpaths, of varied difficulties and lengths, lead the visitors through Italian and Austrian emplacements and galleries on one of the most scenic walks in the Dolomites.

What makes this Museum unique are the numerous, complex systems of tunnels, studded with loopholes, embrasures, or ventilation holes which open onto unusual views of the Dolomite landscape.

The most significant galleries have been restored and can be visited in complete safety; visitors can see the many caverns serving as lodgings for the troops, warehouses for war material and explosives, installation of generators to run the pneumatic hammers used for the excavations. In some of the caverns , exhibition rooms have been prepared, with sound effects reproducing scenes from the soldiers' daily lives.

Among the alternatives, we mention the two classic itineraries:

. The Alpine Troops Path, descending from the Lagazuoi Presummit through an Italian mine gallery to open onto the Martini Ledge; one of the historical sites of the Dolomite front. The time required to complete the itinerary as far as the Falzarego Pass is about 2 hours. Visitors are recommended to wear adequate equipment for a mountain walk and bring a torch. The use of helmets is strongly advised and, although the itinerary does not present climbing difficulties, it is however a demanding track with some exposure in places.

. The Kaiserjaeger Path leads to the Lagazuoi face occupied by the Austrian forces. From the summit, a highly scenic trail descends till a suspension bridge and continues to the Vonbank emplacements. The itinerary can be travelled in one hour and a half. Mountain equipment is required as well as the use of a safety rope on the exposed portion just before the bridge.
